Absolutely . If your prescription is one of a simple magnification there is no reason why not.
Question:
What are simple magnification glasses ?
Answer
On your prescription there will be ONLY a value in the ADD section and nothing else on the prescription. These are simple magnification glasses. Just be sure to get the correct magnifying lenses. e.g. if the script says +2 then that is what you want +2 magnifying glasses.

What if there are other values on the prescription ?
Answer.
Then this is where you need the correct prescription glasses to suit your eyes.

What if I can still see ok with just magnification glasses.
Answer.
This is a very common statement and one to be wary of. If your eyes require proper prescription glasses and you are straining the (even without realising it ) you will be doing damage, maybe only slight to start but it is not worth the worry. This is much better for the health of your eyes than the reflected sunlight from a bright white page of a book.

The industry average is about 40cm from your eyes to your book. This can vary so ensure that you optometrist measures this distance for you.

Can I have Reading Glasses and Distance glasses together in one frame.
Answer:
Yes certainly but these glasses are called multi-focals or Progressives or even No Line Bifocals.

Can I have Reading Glasses and Computer Glasses in the same Lens
Answer ;
Again, yes these are certainly available but they are also multifocals of sorts but the distance porting of the lens is set to the computer distance (normally around 80cm)

How do I choose the right frame for my Reading Glasses?
Answer:
That one is an easy. Just measure your current glasses and choose pretty much the same sizes and shape from the hundreds of glasses on offer on the Ausspecs website.

What are the lenses made of ?
Answer:
Today the vast majority of lenses are made of a plastic material known as CR39 although quickly becoming very popular are the lenses made for Polycarbonate. Although the Poly lenses can be made photochromic the option of standard tinting is not so easy. In this case the molecular structure of the polycarbonate is tightly bound together thus making adhesion of a tinted layer very difficult.
Question;
Do they protect me against Ultra Violet Light
Answer;
The UV rating on all AusSpecs Reading Glasses 99% or better so this should be of no concern.

Federal Government Tells Health Funds - Do Not Pay

The Federal Government and the Health Funds :

The Australian Federal Government recently issued an directive to the Health Funds not to pay benefits to their members for treatment or medical aids (including Prescription Glasses) procured overseas or on the internet from Companies not based in Australia.

The apparent reason behind the directive is to keep Australian Health Dollars in the Australian Health System and not line the pockets of large overseas hospitals and online marketers.

AusSpecs is an Australian based company and not affected by this rule.

In fact we are now Registered Optical Providers to virtually all of the Major Health Funds.

Those websites pretending to be Australian in origin will fall foul of this new law and the losers will be the clients that buy products or have surgical procedures performed overseas, expecting to be able to claim only to be told they are not!

AusSpecs and Multifocal Eyeglasses

What are Multi-Focals ? AKA Progressive lenses and No Line Bifocals
Us Old timers always knew then as Multi-Focals because they effectively have a multiple of areas in the lens that allow us to see clearly. They are often confused with Tri-focal's
but this is not the case
The same is true for what we now call Progressive lenses.
As the name suggests these lenses allow for clear viewing progressing from Distance Viewing at the top to Reading at the bottom of the lens with a small area in the center for Intermediate Viewing
The following Flash Presentation on the Reading, Intermediate and Distance focal points of the Multifocal Lens shows how limited we really are in the viewing area of the lens and also points out that
those that are expecting to don a pair of Multi-focal eyeglasses and see as clearly and as easily as we did as kids are often disappointed.

Can everyone wear Multi-Focals ?

No not all people are suited to wearing these types of prescription glasses.
One of the most common reasons is that with multifocals you need to turn your head to focus on an object rather than just move your eyes.
This takes some getting used to and some re-training of the brain before it becomes second nature. There are other, also medical reason for not being able to wear progressive lenses but fortunately
the vast majority of us that need them can get used to them eventually.
The quality of the Eyeglass Lens is also a very important factor. Only use manufacturers you trust or have been recommended to.
If you are at all concerned the bright side is that it is far better to pay the very cheap prices at www.ausspecs.com.au for excellent quality Multi-focals and find you cant wear them than the hugely expensive prices in the retail stores !

Tri-Focal's

Tri-focal's should not be confused with Multi-focals although this is often the case. Tri-focal's have 3 very different and distinct focal points on the lens and are usually separated by a visible line
between the focal areas. Only a few manufacturers offer this option nowadays

Computer Glasses

Computer glasses consist primarily to let you read both a book and the computer screen with little movement of the head (providing your monitor is setup correctly.
In the past we have only have the option of either Multi-focals (which have a very small Intermediate Viewing area) or Bifocals (which sort of do the job but not exceptionally well).
Clearly a new lens was required for this application and it had to fulfill the requirement to have wide viewing areas for both reading documents and the computer screen. It also had to be specifically
focused on the distance value (normally around 80cm) a person sat from the screen and they had to get rid of the pesky line across the lens.
Fortunately this has now been achieved by manufactures of e.g. the Access Lenses and others so we can all see that little bit better.

Looking for cheap eyeglasses in Australia. Here is some really good advice !

There seems to be a massive misconception in Australia with regard to Prescription Spectacles.

Australians seem to believe that when you get your eyes checked at the local Optometrist you must buy your glasses from the same store in which the Optometrist works.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

An Optometrist is first and foremost a professional entrusted as your "Eye Doctor" and gets paid either by you or by the Government to examine your eyes and write a prescription (if required) for glasses to correct any vision problems (if appropriate). Thats All.

The Good Advice

When visiting the Optometrist think of them as your doctor who, after examining you writes you a prescription. You can take your prescription to any Chemist to have it filled. Do Not feel obliged to buy your glasses from the retail store in which they operate. You may pay dearly for it .
